Nottingham at night

Home of the Robin Hood legend, Nottingham can be found in the Central Midlands and is rife in history and stunning architecture. Impressive surroundings can make or break a city, but fortunately, Nottingham has an extensive number of iconic and Herculean buildings for everyone to explore. Here is a list of a few of our favourites:

Wollaton Hall

More than just an Elizabethan stately home, Wollaton Hall estate is a house, grounds, garden as well as housing Nottingham’s Natural History Museum and Industrial Museum. Its grand architecture is jaw-droppingly stunning, and it can be a nice day out for adults and kids alike, with the extensive grounds and Deer Park. For any film fans reading, you may recognise Wollaton Hall as the setting for Wayne Manor in the Dark Knight Rises.

Adams Building

Located in the Lace Market District of Nottingham and once a lace showroom and warehouse itself, the Adams Building is truly one of the most beautiful buildings in Nottingham. At seven floors high, the orange brick and high windows are an impressive sight and brilliant photo opportunity. It’s commanding Victorian structure is now a location for Nottingham College and hosts subjects in art and design, media, business and more.

Newton Building

Located in the Nottington Trent University part of the city, this University building sticks out among the others and for good reason. The commanding solid white block building gives it a sort of American financial district feel to it and is a fine example of 1950s revolutionary design and architecture. As one of the city’s tallest buildings, it truly stands out among its surroundings as ahead of its time.

Nottingham Cathedral

This gorgeous Cathedral was built in the early Victorian era and designed by the same man who designed the interior of the Houses of Parliament. Just down the road from the Newton building, this Cathedral is the heart and soul of the city, a place of serenity with an incredible spire and interior archways.

We would’ve loved to have included Nottingham Castle on this list, particularly as it’s at the centre of the Robin Hood legend. Unfortunately, it’s closed until 2020 due to renovation work. But, you can still check it out from the outside and photograph the uniquely curved medieval towers.

Since the UK’s move to central heating, our chimneys don’t see a huge amount of use anymore. However, as many households still have one connected to their properties, it is essential to keep your chimney in good nick, especially if you happen to still use yours.

What’s worse, not keeping on top of chimney maintenance can create a potentially dangerous environment. With this in mind, here are four of the most common reasons why you might need chimney repair.

Creosote buildup

Aside from smoke, other substances can end up sticking to the inside of your chimney. Creosote, a chemical made from the burning of plant matter such as wood can quite easily start to cause problems for your chimney if left unchecked.

The tar-like substance mixes with soot and begins to stick to the sides of the chimney, causing a buildup. This can cause untold problems as creosote is an extremely flammable substance, making house fires increasingly likely. Therefore, it is essential to have this cleaned out as soon as possible.

Blockages

Creosote isn’t the only thing prone to blocking a chimney, especially if the chimney in question hasn’t been used for a while. Anything from leaves and debris to birds and wasps nests can make their way into your chimney flue.

Much like creosote, any form of blockage could be a potential fire hazard so it is important to check at least annually for any problems, especially if your chimney is still in use.

Cracks in the flue

Unlike modern chimneys which are built with durable stainless steel flue linings, older builds used clay tiles instead. As clay is a much more brittle material, this means that older chimney flues are prone to crack over time.

Cracks in the flue are extremely dangerous for chimneys that are still in use and pose one of the biggest risks to your home. This because fire can more easily seep through the cracks in the flue, catching fire to other combustible areas of your property and causing untold damage. This is one of the most important reasons why you should have your chimney inspected annually.

Damage to the brickwork

Maintaining the outside of the chimney is equally as important as the inside and if you’re noticing the masonwork beginning to deteriorate, it’s probably time to have some pointing work carried out.

Although not as pressing as flue damage, any deterioration of the brickwork can lead to more significant damage to the building over time so it’s always good to check.
